Tybee Island is a small, approximately 3.3 square mile island located about 30 minutes outside of Savannah that is popular for both day-trippers and vacationers alike.

During our visit to the area, we opted to spend a weekend in order to take in all the sights and really see what Tybee Island was all about.

But prior to booking, we had come across an interesting phenomenon with regards to accommodations on Tybee- the options are either primarily older-looking motels (admittedly with recently updated rooms) or apartment rentals! We decided to go for a private apartment rental and did not look back.

In this one, we wanted to discuss why we did that and also highlight some things to think about when booking a hotel on Tybee Island as the accommodation concerns are a bit unique here.

You hear a lot about war when visiting Savannah. The Revolutionary War, the Civil War, you name it- the region saw its fair share of war over the years.

It isn't until you visit the Civil War-era fort, Fort Pulaski between Savannah and Tybee Island, that you get to see this history up-close. While this one produced a turning point in the war for the Union, it has had a lasting impact on warfare since its fateful battle.

So when you are in Savannah (especially if heading to Tybee Island for a beach getaway), stopping at Fort Pulaski National Monument is a must.

You may know that Savannah is a rather liberal city when it comes to alcohol. The historic district allows for open containers in plastic cups and the city was said to be quite wet even during the days of Prohibition. There is even a popular quote in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil that goes as follows:

“If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, “What's your business?” In Macon they ask, “Where do you go to church?” In Augusta they ask your grandmother's maiden name. But in Savannah the first question people ask you is “What would you like to drink?”

To put it simply, Savannah likes a good drink. If this speaks to you the way that it does me, well, you're going to have a great time when visiting.

As I am a Marriott hotel credit card holder, I sometimes prioritize staying with this hotel chain as a means to rack up points and qualified stays to leverage them into future, grand vacations. 

So when we saw that Marriott had a resort on the beach in Hilton Head Island (a truly prime location on the beach and perhaps the biggest property as well), we knew what we had to do. We snatched up a partial ocean view room and planned for a nice long weekend right on the water.

While we do think this one is a fair bit expensive for what you get (granted, everything is expensive in Hilton Head), if accessibility to the ocean is of utmost importance to you, the Mariott Hilton Head Resort & Spa will not let you down.
