We’ve stayed in a lot of Airbnbs when traveling, and they have run the spectrum from conventional apartments and homes to one-of-a-kind homestays that we never expected to find.

This Hobbit House in Speyside, Scotland, was one such property, and this one was such a treat that we really didn’t want to leave!

The Hobbit House Brings the Shire to Scotland

Hobbit House in Speyside

To say that The Hobbit House in Speyside left no detail untouched is perhaps one of the biggest understatements we’ve made on our blog. They really thought of everything!

The house itself is tucked away on the corner of the property that also features the host family’s home, and it is protected by a raised mound of land that acts as a natural privacy barrier for guests. As you round the bend, the beautiful Hobbit House comes into view, complete with grass covered ceilings, rain chains, and more surprises (be sure to go around the back of the house!)

Inside, you have a massive circular space which doubles as a common area, dining room, and fully loaded kitchen (not pictured). Three rooms can be found on the property as well including a master bedroom, bunk beds for kids, and a bathroom- each with beautiful stained glass windows adding to the aesthetic.

Here, your first quest begins- explore everything.

Not only does this property have all the conventional amenities you’d expect from an Airbnb, it is the finer details that make it a treat. A fairy door along a wall? Yep. A recommended playlist of music from Middle Earth? You know it. They even have hobbit slippers that you can wear while enjoying a fire!

Truly, you can tell that the hosts here are devout artists, because the design and aesthetic is rivaled by none, and we really spent a great deal of time looking at every book, every piece of art, and soaking the unit in.

Are we going on an adventure? Absolutely not, we’re staying here and not moving, thanks.

Truly, it is impossible for us to share every little detail of this space, because otherwise we would overload you with photo after photo that we took during our visit. But as you can imagine from a few of the shots above, this one was a real treat and we were really glad we scored a reservation here!

A Great Location for Exploring Speyside

GlenAllachie Whisky

Admittedly, the fact that we got to stay in a Hobbit House was only part of the highlights. Our main reason for selecting this property for our stay is that it is in the perfect location for exploring Speyside!

We were visiting the area to enjoy local distilleries and to hike in Cairngorms National Park, and found this one to be a perfect spot for easy access to everything. Within moments, we found ourselves at the famous GlenAllachie Distillery (where we found out they had just won the world’s best single malt in 2025- definitely stop and try that), and were also in the town of Aberlour within just a few more minutes driving. The national park was a bit further, of course, but was easily reached all the same.

Truly, we couldn’t have asked for a better location, although, as always, be sure to have a rental car when exploring the area!

Even though this one is found just off a more rural back road, accessing the property is a breeze and was not a problem during our visit with a mid-sized SUV.

  • Important: If you’re visiting distilleries, it is worth noting that drinking and driving laws in Scotland are quite strict. Plan to pick up a driver’s dram at each stop to enjoy back at The Hobbit House later!

Explore the Property Beyond the Hobbit House

Fairy Glen Art at the Hobbit House

To be honest, we would’ve loved this property just for the Hobbit House and the location itself. But the grounds of this one are equally stunning- so be sure to spend a fair bit of time exploring the secrets that can be found within.

Closest to the house, you have the property’s working garden, which was under expansion during our visit. We got a chance to check out some of the plants, as well as the modest on-site greenhouse, and were even allowed to pick ripe produce to cook with for dinner.

Feeding the Ducks

Perhaps the best part of the garden was the resident ducks and chickens, which could be found exploring the property. If you are lucky and the host offers you peas, take them up on the offer because feeding the ducks was truly one of the highlights of our day. Why? They’re crazy for peas, and would follow us around quacking (including waiting in front of our door)- with one duck coming running from far in a distance when the other ducks got excited for pea time.

Head down the trail near the garden, and you’ll reach the fairy glen, which has so many unique pieces of art and design aesthetics around the creek flowing through the property. We won’t spoil some of the secrets here, but suffice it to say that despite walking around 2-3 times per day during our stay, we were still discovering new things to look at.

We really covered every square inch of this one to see everything!

The Witch's Hut

But the final surprise on the property is a full-sized witch’s hut, complete with ingredients for potions, a stove, and more. It is so large, in fact, that you can get inside and have a sit if you were so inclined, and we have to imagine that kids especially love this one to play in!

Overall, The Hobbit House in Speyside was quite the treat, and we’d go as far as saying it was one of the best Airbnbs we’ve ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Our only regret was that we didn’t have more time, because the rest of Scotland was calling us to explore. Next time, we’ll settle in to enjoy the property as much as the region at large- it is just that good.
